Unfortunately, scammers around the world are looking to take advantage of travelers whether it’s in Hawaii or elsewhere. Each day, people from around the world are being scammed out of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, many visitors don’t find out about this until they have arrived at their destination. Hopefully, some of the information below will help you make informed decisions before it’s too late. NEVER wire money for accommodations if you have never done business with the company before. Its best not to wire money at all. NEVER pay for accommodations through a smartphone app. Many apps are very easy to hack into. If this happens to you, your credit card information, etc., could be compromised. NEVER do business with a company through email only. Pick up the phone and call the company to ensure that it’s legitimate. Also, make sure the company you’re doing business with has a physical address. You should stay away from any company that uses a P.O. Box number. This is a potential red flag. NEVER do business with a company that has a no cancellation policy or a restrictive cancellation policy. NEVER pay for your entire stay upfront. If the company you’re looking to do business with asks for the full amount upfront then look elsewhere. Reputable companies will only ask for a deposit to hold the reservation and ask you to pay the balance upon arrival. NEVER use a debit card to pay for your accommodations. Always use a major credit card in case you have to dispute an amount. NEVER buy anything from a website that doesnt have a telephone number listed on its website. If you have a concern and you cant contact someone via telephone then you run the risk of losing a lot of money. GOOGLE the company name to make sure that the phone number, email address, business address, city, state, and business contacts are legitimate. Legitimate companies that have nothing to hide will typically have photos of their staff on their website as well so you can put a name with a face or faces. If you can’t confirm all of this information then take your business elsewhere. A reputable company typically has a reservations office and or telephone number that you you can call. Be wary of companies that don’t. As a general rule, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
