United tried to sign the Portuguese left back on the very end of the deadline day however it was cancelled after Real Madrid failed to find a replacement. Coentrao is competing against Marcelo at Madrid, one of the best left backs in the world and has struggled to get game time. Evra is still performing well however at the age of 32 he has lost some of his pace. Coentrao would be a super addition to the United squad and would be a worthy replacement for the United vice-captain. 2. Hulk The strong left winger has not settled in at Zenit Saint Petersburg after his big money move of £33.5 million from Porto. United have looked fairly weak on the wings with Nani, Young and Valencia dipping in and out of form. Hulk would provide fire power going forward and having the physical presence of Hulk and Valencia on the wings would be a partnership worth challenging for the Champions League. 3. Cesc Fabregas With the likes of Xavi and Iniesta to contend for a starting spot in your preferred position no midfielder is likely to get on the field too much. Fabregas has failed to secure a starting position for Barcelona and with a world cup coming up this summer Fabregas must be playing. United had two bids rejected and the Spanish midfielder stated he wished to stay at the La Liga champions. If he fails to cement a starting spot this season he may look for a way out in January and despite the recent arrival of Fellaini, United would be the perfect match for him. 4. Angel Di Maria With the arrival of Isco and Bale Di Maria may find himself getting less game time than he is used to. Although he is a world class winger the price tag of Bale may force Ancelotti to play him. He would have to be played either as an attacking centre midfielder or right winger, therefore forcing Di Maria out. The Argentinean winger would be a huge asset to Manchester United and provide much needed quality on the wings, that said the Premier League Champions may have to dish out a hefty fee. 5. Mats Hummels The champions league finalist has proved he is a quality centre back who is also happy on the ball. He has also proved his worth for Germany with 25 caps at just 24 which is impressive considering the quality of the German side. United have Vidic and Ferdinand at the heart of the defence who are arguably the strongest defensive partnership in the League and maybe Europe. That said they are 31 and 34 which will do for a season or two however a replacement is necessary. That said, Jones, Smalling and Evans have shown they are good players and could partner Hummels in the future. It may not be a signing the Red Devils need now however it may prove to be a great piece of business.
