University of Missouri Extension will be offering a Master Gardener spring online training course beginning February 2, 2014. Course objectives are to understand the mission of the Missouri Master Gardener Program and how it functions; to acquire a working knowledge of the fundamental principles of plant growth and development; to apply concepts of plant growth and development to everyday situations and uses in horticulture; to learn basic terminology associated with the art and science of horticulture; and to gain an appreciation of horticulture as a life-long pursuit. This course provides a foundation in plant structure and function; soils and plant nutrition; plant propagation; fruits; vegetables; herbaceous and wood plants; entomology; plant pathology; landscape design; lawns; and pesticides usage. It is the online version of the core training required for individuals wishing to become certified Missouri Master Gardeners. In addition to completing this course individuals also must devote 30 hours of volunteer service to become certified. Non-Master Gardener trainees take the class for personal or professional development. Instruction is done by University of Missouri Extension faculty and delivered via MOODLE. Online registration is available at: https://extweb.missouri.edu/courses/default.aspx?courseid=99 Cost for the course is $175 if you are taking the course for Master Gardener certification, requiring 30 hours of community service and $325 if you are taking the course for personal enrichment only, no community service hours are required and there is no certification.
