University of Notre Dame Salutes the Military Whether youre based on foreign soil, youre somewhere closer to home or youre retired military, the University of Notre Dame salutes your service Notre Dames association with the military reaches back more than 150 years. During World War II, the Naval ROTC program kept the all-male school financially afloat as an estimated 12,000 officers completed their training here between 1942 and 1946. Signs of this continuing friendship are everywhere. The seals of the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy flank the main entrance to the Rockne Memorial Gymnasium. Around the corner at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the churchs Memorial Entrance is inscribed with the words God, Country, Notre Dame to honor Notre Dame men who died in World War I. The light fixture in the entry way is fashioned from the helmet of Rev. Charles ODonnell, CSC, 12th president of the University. He was one of eight priests from the local Holy Cross community who served as chaplains during the war. This is more than just a football game, this school and band display true humility, they dont call themselves the best, they are not plagued by school, band, and student scandals. This is a genuine gesture of thanks to the Armed Forces of the United States.
