University of Nottingham SikhSoc would like to wish you all a very very HAPPY GURPURAB! It is Guru Nanak Dev Jis birthday today - the founder of Sikhism who was born in 1469. His first statement after his prophetic communion with God was There is no Hindu, nor any Mussalman - there is only one God This is an announcement that declared not only the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God, but also his clear and primary interest not in any metaphysical doctrine but only in man and his fate. It means love your neighbour as yourself. He chose to mix with all. He dined and lived with men of the lowest castes and classes, considering the then prevailing cultural practices and traditions, this was something socially and religiously unheard of in those days. There is much to learn through Guru Nanak Dev Jis teachings; one of the many important ones being Man Jeete Jag Jeet which is mentioned in Japji Sahib and it means You conquer your mind, you conquer the world.
