Unlawful and Lawful Food The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu - TopicsExpress

Unlawful and Lawful Food The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “That flesh is more deserving of Hell-Fire which has grown on unlawful food.” [Minhaj ul-Abideen] After a long journey Imam Shafi’ee finally reached Baghdad and arrived at Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbals house. In the evening, when Imam Shafi’ee sat down to eat, he ate wholeheartedly. This was surprising since pious people eat very little. It turned out that Imam Shafi’ee had faced some hardship during the journey. After he had Ieft Cairo his pouch of Dirhams and Dinars had gotten lost. He then had two options; one was to go back and arrange provisions for the journey all over again. But then the caravan would leave and the Muhaddith that he desired to meet might leave the world before he got the chance to meet him. The second option he had was to put his reliance in Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and continue on the journey. He preferred the second option. His fellow travelers honoured him and took good care of him but he was not sure if their income were Halal. In such cases Islamic jurisprudence allows one to eat as much as is necessary to maintain life. So on the third or fourth days only would he accept some food from them and he did not eat his fill even once during the entire journey. In Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbals house he finally saw food of Halal income. He had always felt that food of Halal income had a special kind of Noor (light) which one could sense as soon as one sat to eat. The amount of Noor he saw on the food presented by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal he had never seen anywhere else before. So he took advantage of it and ate to his fill.
