Unless we start to fight and defeat the enemies in our own country, poverty and racism, and make our talk of equality and opportunity ring true, we are exposed in the eyes of the world as hypocrites when we talk about making people free.--Shirley Chisholm (Nov. 30, 1924 – Jan. 1, 2005) - born on this day in 1924. In 1969, Chisholm was the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and was re-elected six times until she retired from political office in 1983. She spoke out for civil rights and womens rights, advocated for the poor and opposed the Vietnam War. She ran for the Democratic nomination for President in 1972.
