Unlicensed: Iain Sinclair at New Unity The Richard Price Memorial Lecture 2015 New Unity 39A Newington Green London N16 9PR 11 February 2015 7.30 p.m. Tickets: £10 on the door and from Eventbrite eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-richard-price-memorial-lecture-2015-tickets-14915951011 Terry Eagleton, Owen Jones, Barbara Taylor and Will Self have all done it — and this year Iain Sinclair is the Richard Price speaker at one of London’s great dissenting spaces, Newington Green Chapel in north London. Price was the 18th century minister at Newington Green — friend of the French and American revolutions, of Tom Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Mary Wollenstonecraft, and each year the chapel invites a speaker to respond to Price’s invitation to reflect on liberty, ethics, reason and justice. Iain Sinclair is that speaker on February 11th. He js both a local and a cosmopolitan, a writer, a film-maker, a thinker a poet and a voice that is always seeking to find the hidden and the meaningful within the increasingly narrow scope of political and cultural life to which we are subject. His title — Unlicensed — reflects the wide scope of his own most recent project, 70x70: Unlicensed Preaching, in which he selected 70 seminal films to be screened across London (and it is now a book available from Volcano Publishing), and it reflects the permission he takes to be in time and out of the times in which we live, unfashionably committed to voices who hold contrary opinions, and to the requirement for speaking up for dissent. Please join us on the historic pews of dissent for this year’s Richard Price lecture — the evening will be chaired by writer Claire MacDonald, there will be a bar, good conversation, and much to talk about.
