Upcoming Events Around the Hills Jan 17 - TONIGHT SPEARFISH — Spearfish Regional Hospital marks its 50th year providing health care to the Queen City today. The public is invited to attend an anniversary reception from 5-7 p.m. today at the Spearfish Holiday Inn and Convention Center to help celebrate this milestone. • Dutch oven buffalo chili feed Jan. 18 PIEDMONT — The public is invited to a Dutch oven buffalo chili feed from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church. The chili will be prepared and cooked outdoors in cast iron Dutch ovens, and is the winning recipe from the 2013 Custer State Park Buffalo Round-Up Chili Cook Off. There will be a free will offering. For more information, call 787-5588. • Spaghetti feed Jan. 18 DEADWOOD — There will be spaghetti feed from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Deadwood Pavilion. There is a raffle for a new snowboard to be given away during the spaghetti feed. Proceeds from the raffle and spaghetti feed are to help a local student participate in the Student Ambassador Program, which would be in Spain, France, and Italy. The program provides a unique opportunity for educational growth, which can help give students an edge in the classroom. • 15th annual chili and soup supper Jan. 20 SPEARFISH — The 15th annual chili and soup supper to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, located at 844 5th St., in Spearfish. Cost of admission is non-perishable food items or cash donations to benefit the food pantry. • ‘Think Snow’ Winter Photography Exhibit Jan. 27 LEAD — The Lead Deadwood Arts Center will sponsor “Think Snow” Winter Photography Exhibit during Lead’s 2014 Winterfest celebration. The Arts Center is asking local residents to enter their best winter photography by Jan. 27. An open house to unveil the exhibit will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, just before the Winterfest parade, with refreshments served. Art must be framed or matted for hanging and no smaller than an 8x10. The is an exhibit and not a contest (with the exception of an award for “Best Atlas Photo” - blizzard of 2013). The exhibit will remain on display until the end of February. For more information, call 584-1461 or visit leaddeadwoodartscenter. • Polar Plunge sponsors, teams needed SPEARFISH — It’s that time of year again when hundreds of area residents jump into freezing cold water to support Special Olympics South Dakota. The fifth annual Polar Plunge will be held on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Spearfish Rec and Aquatics Center. Sponsors and teams are still needed, so anyone interested in being a part of this event, contact Candi Birk with the Spearfish Police Department via e-mail at candi.birk@cityofspearfish or by calling her at 645-4080. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and the plunge will take place at 2 p.m. Costumes are highly recommended and add a flair and a bit of comic relief to the event. Individuals, or teams can register by visiting firstgiving/sosd and selecting “Spearfish Polar Plunge.” • Special Olympics ‘Tip-a-Cop’ rescheduled Jan. 22 SPEARFISH — The Special Olympics ‘Tip-a-Cop’ has been rescheduled from 5-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Spearfish Applebee’s. Local law enforcement officers will trade in their handcuffs to spend the evening serving the public for a great cause. 100 percent of the “special tips” donated to the officers will benefit Special Olympics South Dakota.
