Upcoming Training Announcement. please contact the fire department if you would like to attend FRANKLIN SQUARE & MUNSON FIRE DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP 101 & RISK vs. BENEFIT TRAINING THE INSTRUCTOR: John McMahon, Jr. John’s career in the fire service started in 1973, when he was a volunteer firefighter for the Hicksville Fire Department in Hicksville, New York. He transitioned south to the Ft. Myers area in 1980, and ended his career service as Deputy Fire Chief of Operations in 2010, with the South Trail Fire Protection & Rescue Service District in Lee County, FL. He has continued to volunteer at Bayshore Fire District in Lee County and is currently the Training Lieutenant. John has been a fire service instructor since 1988. Since retirement, he has started a training company called Emergency Response Training Concepts which has expanded his teaching talents to enrich fire service and emergency personnel around the Country. His extensive knowledge base allows him to share his years of training and experience which makes the firefighter to top ranking officers thinks creatively yet realistically about current trends and issues facing the emergency service. LEADERSHIP 101 ‐ Know Your People; Know Yourself Description: The focus of this class is to prepare fire officers or individuals that want to become a fire officer in the basic fundamentals for leading, motivating, and managing people. This class will review the leadership traits necessary to be or become a successful fire officer and leader. Class Objectives: • Determine what makes a progressive officer. • Identify the challenges that fire officers face. • Understand Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. • Learn the 10 Cs of an effective officer. • Recognize the 21 leadership principles of effective officers. • Identify leadership types and style attributes of a successful leader. • Learn leadership survival tips. RISK vs. BENEFIT ‐ How to be Aggressive and Safe Description: This class is designed to prepare firefighters and officers in the basic fundamentals of conducting a Risk vs. Benefit analysis when responding to a incident. It will cover the steps necessary to be aggressive yet safe. The class will utilize fire scenarios to determine the safest tactical considerations based on building construction, fire conditions, personnel needs, and equipment. Class Objectives: • Examine current fire trends. • Understand building construction and its effects during a fire. • Conduct proper size up. • Reading smoke and fire conditions. • Recognize operational pitfalls affecting an incident. • Operating aggressively, but safe. • Determine the risk vs. the benefit on every call. • Making the right call. • Making sure everyone goes home.
