Update: Since this statement was developed, we have since heard that the protestors have been released. Nonetheless, as a 30 year old network of south women advocates including in the Pacific, DAWN reiterates our strongest solidarity with feminist sister advocates in Fiji, and all human-rights and social justice focused south civil society and social movements. See our short statement below... Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) calls for the immediate release of Fiji citizens, including feminist activists taken in custody today in Suva Fiji, for their silent protest over a new Fiji Constitution that is to be signed by the President of Fiji today, Friday 6 September, 2013. We further call for immediate and substantive respect for the civil and political rights of the people of Fiji to determine their own future, and to register public opinions on all issues of development, security, governance and democratisation. It is the bedrock of social justice and human rights. People have the right to speak - and to be heard!
