Update : Statement from Editor Harry Deitz: What matters most is doing the right thing. It’s important for all of us. That’s not always easy. In fact, many times it is downright difficult. But we still need to do the right thing. One of our veteran police reporters, Jason Kahl, is no longer working for the Reading Eagle. We’re sure many of our readers will miss his contributions. His dismissal was a private, ongoing personnel matter that is receiving a lot of attention on social media sites. Here is what I will share: Every media company has basic policies that must be followed. That applies to readingeagle and all of our company social media sites, just as it does to our print edition. That ensures that information and photos are edited and verified. This is central to our mission. Facebook and other forms of social media are important new ways for people to get information. We understand that. I understand it. But they also have the potential to be damaging and hurtful, as we are learning. This situation is emblematic of the emerging difference between independent social media and traditional journalism. Our credibility is essential to our role as your primary news source in Berks County. We will do everything possible to maintain that credibility. We believe our readers will understand the importance of maintaining standards for the news we collect and present, including how and when that news is published. Anything else would be irresponsible. Anything else would be downright wrong.
