Update: TS Amang maintains strength; moves closer to E. Samar --PAGASA MANILA, Jan. 17 (PNA) -- The number of areas under public storm warning signal (PSWS) No. 2 in Luzon and the the Visayas increased from eight to 12 as tropical storm Amang maintained its strength as it moved closer to Eastern Samar, the state weather bureau said on Saturday. In its latest weather bulletin, PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m. Saturday, the center of tropical storm “Amang” was estimated based on Doppler Radar and all available data at 120 kilometers east-northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar (11.8°N, 126.5°E), packed with maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 130 kph. It is forecast to move northwestward at 17 kph. The agency said that with its speed and movement, storm “Amang” might hit Borongan City, Eastern Samar Saturday afternoon or early evening. The storm is expected to be at the vicinity of Legazpi City, Albay on Sunday morning. It is forecast to be at 50 km northeast of Baler, Aurora by Monday morning and at 235 km northeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, PSWS No. 2 (winds of 61-100 kph expected in at least 24 hours) is raised over Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Burias Island, including Ticao Island in Luzon, and Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte and Biliran in the Visayas. These areas will have stormy weather with heavy to intense rains. Residents along coastal areas are alerted against possible storm surges of less than two meters. PSWS No. 1 (winds of 30-60 kph expected in at least 36 hours) is hoisted over Camarines Norte, Quezon, including Polillo Island, Laguna, Rizal, Batangas, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro and Romblon in Luzon and Northern Iloilo, Northern part of Negros Occidental, Southern Leyte, Northern Cebu, including Cebu City, Bantayan Island, Camotes Island, Capiz and Aklan in the Visayas and Dinagat Island in Mindanao. These areas will have occasional rains with occasional gusty winds. Residents in low-lying and mountainous areas of the provinces with PSWS#2 and #1 are alerted against possible flash floods and landslides. The estimated rainfall amount is from 7.5 to 20 millimeters per hour (heavy to intense) within the 400-km diameter of the storm. Ocean waves may reach up to nine meters within its diameter. Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of Luzon, the Visayas and the eastern seaboard of Mindanao. PAGASA also said that in the next six hours, there is a possibility of raising PSWS No. 1 over Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Aurora.
