Update (Thursday 10-16-14): Mahalo everyone for their continued support and for being kūpaʻa (steadfast). We are excited to share with you that there was water at the paukūkalo muliwai (river mouth) of Wailuku as of 7:30 this morning. Many have attributed this to the overnight rains that occurred in ʻĪao, however this was not so. On the flip side, the amount is still but a trickle AND there is no mauka to makai connectivity between the Wailuku Water Company ʻĪao/Māniania Diversion Intake and the release point (965 ft.) and the HC&S Spreckels Diversion Intake in Happy Valley and the release point (100+ ft.) This is critical for native habitat. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO GET WWC AND HC&S TO FINISH THE JOB!!! CONNECTIVITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY!! A pretty good article also came out in the Maui News today regarding our plight. They finally agreed to hear the voices of the community and disseminate to the greater Maui and Hawaiʻi community regarding the ongoing challenges that we are facing. WWC & HC&S say they are still making adjustments. What the Maui News article failed to say to the public is that these companies had 5 1/2 months to adjust and do it right! Because there are currently no measuring gauges on these streams, even as we type this message, we have no clue as to what the true amount of water is in the Waikapū, Wailuku, Waiehu, and Waiheʻe Streams as it relates to the set IIFS. We are continuing to work with the State Water Commission Staff to get these gauges permanently installed on each stream. On Monday during the releases in both Wailuku and Waikapū, CWRM Staff and the 2 of the 7 Water Commissioners (Dr. Kamana Beamer and Jonathan Starr) were able to visually see and hear the challenges that Hui o Nā Wai ʻEhā is dealing with. As we appreciate their time and support, we also hope that they will move swiftly in addressing the connectivity issue and measuring/monitoring issues with Wailuku Water Company and HC&S. The Community of Maui have waited patiently for a long time and hope to have some sort of reprieve in the very near future! Please stay tuned for a follow up message regarding our upcoming Hui o Nā Wai ʻEhā Rally next week Friday (10-24-14). PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE! If you have any comments or questions, let us know. Mahalo nui! E ola ka wai a Kāne!
