*Update from Dar* “NO MATTER HOW YOU FEEL… GET UP, DRESS UP, SHOW UP, AND NEVER GIVE UP. When I read this quote today it first brought me to tears because of the recent struggles Troy has been having. No matter how Troy is feeling he gets up, gets dressed and never misses school, therapy and life no matter what! I have not posted an update in a couple of months and have been waiting to post something incredibly positive and uplifting. This post is an update of the daily struggles of Troy and millions of people suffering with spinal cord injury and how important it is to find a cure to give these people a chance of having a normal life. A month ago Troy started to have trouble breathing and was having extreme upper body weakness. Troy was experimenting with a MS medication 4AP which they are also prescribing for incomplete spinal cord injuries. With the side effects he was experiencing we decided to discontinue the medication. His breathing seemed to get better but his weakness did not. After a complete examination and negative chest x-ray we sent his urine sample in for a culture. Since the beginning of Troy’s injury the non-function of his bladder and bowels has been the most difficult complication. The recent clinical trials with the epidural stimulation especially for the bowels and bladder are so incredibly important and exciting for people suffering with SCI. I hope and pray for the return of this function for Troy every day!!! As the days went by he continued to feel worse and at that point there was no doubt in my mind it was a urinary tract infection. I felt like I missed it, felt guilty and a failure as his Mom and his caregiver that Troy suffered longer than necessary. Than another unfortunate turn of events happened the lab lost his urine sample and called me on a Friday night to run another sample down to the hospital. Within the next 2 days he started with a fever and finally they were able to prescribe an antibiotic that was sensitive to the bacteria. To say the least I was extremely disappointed and upset with this hospital. After a week of the antibiotic, macro bid which is extremely harsh and makes Troy feel really shitty I still felt like he had the uti. After 3 calls to his urologist with no return call from a nurse or doctor I was running another urine sample to the lab and he is currently back on macro bid for the same infection. During this time I spoke several times to his doctor in Baltimore who ordered a renal ultrasound and x-ray of his abdomen to make sure there are no other complications. We are waiting for the results. Janet from Kennedy Krieger is awesome and really understands the complications of this injury. I am grateful for Kennedy Krieger! Tomorrow is Troy’s last day on the antibiotic. We are hoping the bacteria is completely gone and Troy can get back to feeling good, working hard on his recovery and getting back to his singing!! Please continue to pray for Troy and all those suffering with spinal cord injury. “A HERO IS AN ORDINARY INDIVIDUAL WHO FINDS THE STRENGTH TO PERSERVERE AND ENDURE IN SPITE OF OVERWHELMING OBSTACLES.” Christohper Reeves To hope, faith, and continued recovery!!! Thank you for continuing to follow Troy and encouraging him to keep fighting even on the hardest days!! Never Stop Believing!!
