Update from Welham Girls Principal : Monday, 31 March 2014 Dear Parents and Well-wishers of the school, As you all know through the detailed reports which have appeared in the papers and on the internet, I have received a letter which has been worded as a threat to the School. I immediately informed the senior-most authorities of Uttarakhand State – the bureaucracy and the police – about the threat and they have swung into immediate action. Although the letter says that it is from the Indian Mujahideen, the police say that this has become a common ploy lately for all sorts of letters and notes being received over the past year or so in Uttarakhand. This too is most likely an empty threat to gain attention. The Board of Governors does not wish to panic nor do we want to take any chances; hence we are taking the note very seriously. We are all aware of the current political climate and are determined to keep our children safe. We are receiving constant support from the police and a special security package has been put into place to make the campus and the surrounding area secure. I must assert that all of us staff members are firmly in school to look after all the children here and we shall proceed with Board examinations and other school activities. The campus is quite safe and we shall continue to beef up on-campus security measures. However, we are not allowing visitors and outings till further notice. Meanwhile, as some parents may be feeling anxious, the Board of Governors has decided that students may go home with parents or local guardians for the next week. Your daughter’s House Mistress will let you know where to collect your daughter from and at what time. I will constantly be monitoring the situation along with the concerned authorities and will remain in touch with all the families as we do not wish to disrupt school activities. The staff and I will be with the students staying on in campus at all times and will carry on with our work as we are not closing school. My office will also function as normal. You will appreciate the need for us to remain calm; hence you are requested to please follow all the security procedures that we are asking you to follow and will effect the collection of your daughter as quietly as possible. I am confident that we shall all be back to full normal school routine very soon. With best wishes, Mrs. Jyotsna Brar Principal
