"Update from the FARE newsletter: "The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) have issued a consensus report on the current state of allergen immunotherapy, which is published in the May 2013 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. In food allergy, the authors note that small clinical trials have shown that oral immunotherapy (OIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) have been successful in desensitizing patients to a number of allergens, including milk, peanut and egg. However, larger studies are needed to determine the optimal dosage, the risks of therapy vs. avoidance, and which patients will benefit from this therapy. Until we have this information, the report states, these therapies – which have not been approved by the FDA – are not ready for use in allergists’ offices and should only be administered within the setting of a clinical trial."
