Update on Simon Smithers,I got a message from Mark who tells me Simon is getting better slowly. His other brother Mick has posted the following message on his rugby club board:- Right, friends of Simon, time for some really Good News. Simon has been off sedation totally for a few days, and yesterday he decided to rip the trachy out of his throat. Doctors have decided to keep it out as he now breaths/coughs 100% on his own. He also decided to pull out his feeding tube, but this will obviously have to be put back, to keep his very thin legs growing, family joke. Then, on top of that, they have now decided to transfer him late last night out of ICU, into the Trauma Unit, so that the neurosurgeons and physios can hopefully start working their magic. Shame, all this happened the day after my mom flew back to SA. This is still a long road ahead, but these small positive steps are really encouraging, and hopefully further good news in the days ahead. My brother Mark and sister in law Sarah are doing amazing things getting Simon awake/alert/focus/recognize etc and it is really appreciated. Simon is still in coma, still critical, but waking up more frequently. The trauma unit is still very high care and unfortunately until the doctors decide otherwise, visitors are still not allowed. Get better soon Simon and will visit as soon as I am allowed.
