Update on full day kindergarten. A message for incoming Kindergarten Families from Dr. Morse: Dear In-Coming Kindergarten Parents, The Oyster River Cooperative School Board has authorized me to explore the possibility of implementing a full-day Kindergarten option for the 2013-2014 school year. The intent of this letter is to provide you with our current Kindergarten design and details of the proposed option. Currently, ORCSD offers a half-day program included in the voter approved budget. This program is not tuition-based and offers a morning option from 8:45AM to11:25AM and an afternoon option from 12:35PM to 3:10PM, five days per week. Currently students in the half-day program have the experience of snack time (snacks sent from home) and do not eat lunch at school. The proposed full-day program would be tuition-based for families that are interested. The program would run from 8:45AM-3:10PM, five days per week. Students would be provided with breakfast, snack and lunch for a fee of $210 per week. Our projections for 2013-2014 show 111 in-coming kindergarteners. We will have the ability to offer a full-day Kindergarten program to 60 of those students. Since the District does not have the space available for all Kindergarten students to attend full-day sessions, a selection process would be utilized. Due to declining enrollment, the following year, 2014-2015, the District anticipates having the space to house 75 full-day students. In addition, for 2015-2016, we anticipate being able to provide the full-day programming to all Kindergarten students. If parents were not interested in this option, they would have the ability to dismiss their children at the half-day dismissal time. The District has heard from parents over the years that they would like a full-day Kindergarten option. My presentation to the Board on May 15 was to communicate the possibility of offering such an opportunity on a tuition basis. The District recognizes this may or may not be an attractive option for everyone. In order to pursue the matter further I am seeking potential interest. I would like to meet with prospective parents of incoming kindergarteners to share the PowerPoint I presented to the Board and offer an opportunity for discussion. We have scheduled two elementary meetings for incoming Kindergarten families. The first will be for families with students attending Mast Way. It will be held at in the cafeteria at Mast Way School on June 11 from 6:00PM to 7:30PM. The second will be for families with students attending Moharimet. This will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room at Moharimet on June 13 from 6:00PM to 7:30pm. In the meantime, if you are interested in the full-day Kindergarten option as explained, please email me at [email protected] to assist us in gathering potential interest. I look forward to speaking with you further about this opportunity on June 11 or June 13. Sincerely, Dr. James C. Morse, Sr., Superintendent
