*****Update on the Little Puppy that is struggling to get well....we are still trying to find out who did this ! From the Registar-Star By Jim Planck Columbia-Greene Media | 0 comments JEFFERSON HEIGHTS - A five-month old puppy is finishing up his second week of recovery from severe animal-inflicted wounds, after being found in a parking lot in the Town of Catskill hamlet of Jefferson Heights, on Saturday, Aug. 24. Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA President/Investigator Ronald Perez said Thursday the puppy was spotted lying down, motionless, by a passerby about 7 p.m., in the parking lot of 149 County Route 23B, “a small apartment complex,” Perez said, which is the address of Colonial Garden Apartments. Perez said that Catskill Dog Control was called — which, due to a request, was being covered that evening by Athens Dog Control Officer Sherry Vieta — and Vieta responded and immediately transported the puppy to Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA, in Hudson. Upon examination, it was found to have serious wounds that appeared to be from another dog, and Perez said it was rushed to Chatham Small Animal Hospital, in North Chatham, where it was placed in intensive care for more than a week. CSAH owner and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Jerry Bilinksi said Thursday the puppy should make a full recovery, and Perez confirmed that the prognosis is good. “He’s doing great,” Perez said, “but he’s still there.” “He still has some infection,” he explained. “The hole in the throat hasn’t completely healed.” “They’re working on this dog every day,” he added, “flushing (wounds) numerous times a day.” “But he’s bouncing around,” Perez said. “He’s a nice little dog.” “The owner,” Perez said, “apparently didn’t want to pay for medical care,” noting that CSAH is donating the majority of the puppy’s recovery and medical expenses. Perez said once the dog has fully recovered, his future will be assured. “We’ll find him a home,” he said, adding that meanwhile, a focused effort is being made to locate the puppy’s former owner, who, Perez said, will be facing animal cruelty charges. Asked of the incident, Perez said, “It (the puppy) was mauled — perhaps by another (party’s) dog, perhaps by their dog, if the owner has another.” “Yes, it could have wandered out (and been attacked),” he said, “but either way I find it highly unlikely with a puppy that the owner didn’t (abandon it afterward), because normally if you lose a puppy, you’re calling around to try to find it.” “We’d really like to find out who owned this dog,” Perez said. “This is heinous, what this poor little guy went through.” “So if anyone has any information,” he said, “they can call us.” Perez and Columbia-Greene Humanity Society/SPCA can be reached at (518) 828-6044, ext. 108, or by emailing [email protected]. *** To reach reporter Jim Planck, call 518-943-2100, ext. 3324, or e-mail [email protected].
