Update on todays incident on Riding Center Drive. As many are aware, a 6 year old girl was struck by a vehicle at the Unicorn Drive intersection. First and foremost, the indications I have from Fire-Rescue are that the injuries are not life threatening. The accident itself is under investigation by the Sheriffs Office. We should not jump to conclusions until that investigation is complete. Regarding Riding Center Drive, traffic calming, and four way intersections: this has been a topic of discussion with VDOT for some time. Riding Center is designated as a collector road--as such, it does not have stop signs on it except for the major intersection at Tall Cedars. Collector roads are supposed to favor through traffic, and VDOT is not likely to approve additional stop signs. Further, Riding Center was designed and certified at 35 mph. When weve had the discussion about the speed limit before with VDOT, we were told that it could not simply be lowered and that tickets would not be enforceable. Riding Center Drive has already been subject to a design effort to slow speeds, which resulted in narrowing in certain areas. Well continue to talk to VDOT and the Sheriffs Office about this incident, but I wanted to provide some background from my previous discussions.
