Updated: SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH Issued by MetService at 06:49 pm Tuesday 05 November 2013 Valid until Midnight Tuesday 05 November 2013 This watch affects people in the following weather forecast districts: Northland Auckland Great Barrier Island An active front is moving southeast across Northland and Auckland this evening. There is a risk of SEVERE thunderstorms with and slightly ahead of the front this evening over the east of Northland from the Bay of Islands southwards, the northeast of Auckland and Great Barrier Island. These storms could be accompanied by damaging wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h, damaging tornadoes and downpours, 25 to 30mm/hr. Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous. If any tornados occur, they will only affect very localised areas. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
