Updated Washington legislative election returns: After four additional days of vote counting since Election Night, there are several updates, particularly those races that appear to have definitively been settled with later returns, as well as a couple of races that are still very much up in the air. Washington State Senate: It appears fairly certain, barring a dramatic and unprecedented reverse in the current vote count trends, that the Republicans and Majority Coalition Caucus will continue to control the Senate, with 25 Republicans and one dissident Democrat making up the 26 - 23 majority. All incumbents were victorious in their re-election campaigns: LD 6: Republican Senator Mike Baumgartner defeating Democrat Mike Cowan, by 57.18% - 42.82% LD 26: Republican Senator Jan Angel defeating Democrat Judy Arbogast, by 58.71% - 41.29% LD 28: Republican Senator Steve OBan defeating Democratic State Rep. Tami Green, by 54.45% - 45.55% LD 31: Republican Senator Pam Roach defeating her Republican challenger, State Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, by 53.6% - 46.4% LD 35: MCC Dissident Democratic Senator Tim Sheldon defeating Democratic challenger, Irene Bowling, by 54.44% - 45.56% LD 42: Republican Senator Doug Erickson defeating Democrat Seth Fleetwood, by 58.73% - 41.27% LD 44: Democratic Senator Steve Hobbs (44th LD) defeating Republican Jim Kellett, by 54.68% - 45.32% LD 45: Republican Senator and Ways & Means Chairman Andy Hill defeating Democrat Matt Isenhower, by 52.9% - 47.1% in the most expensive election race of the year. In addition, in the 30th Legislative District, one new Republican was elected in a formerly-Democratic seat: former Democratic State Rep. Mark Miloscia, running as a Republican, defeated Shari Song by a margin of 55.96% - 44.04% to replace retired Democratic State Senator Tracey Eide. Offsetting this in the 48th District, a new Democrat was elected in a formerly-MCC Democratic seat: Democratic State Rep. Cyrus Habib defeated Republican Michelle Darnell by a margin of 64.63% - 35.37% to replace retired MCC Majority Leader Rodney Tom. To maintain the Republican control of the Senate seat in the 13th District, Republican State Rep. Judy Warnick defeated Democrat Muhammad Said by a margin of 86.46% - 13.54%, to replace Republican State Senator Janea Holmquist Newbry, who unsuccessfully ran for Congress. To maintain the Democratic control of the Senate seat in the 37th District, Democratic candidate Pramila Jayapal defeated fellow Democrat Louis Watanabe by a margin of 69.91% - 30.09%, to replace retiring Democratic State Senator Adam Kline. Washington State House of Representatives: Though there are a couple of races that are still within the margin of mandatory recounts, or whose results could technically still be altered by the remaining votes to be counted, it appears that there will be a majority of Democrats in the House. However, the following seats are still very much still in contention, meaning that the Democratic majority could range anywhere from 53-45 to 50-48: LD 26: Republican Michelle Caldier defeating incumbent Democratic State Rep Larry Seaquist by 50.52% - 49.48% (502 votes) LD 28: Democrat Christine Kilduff defeating Republican Paul Wagemann by 50.39% - 49.61% (294 votes) to replace Democratic State Rep. Tami Green, who unsuccessfully ran for the State Senate LD 35: Republican Dan Griffey defeating incumbent Democratic State Rep. Kathy Haigh by 50.56% - 49.44% (513 votes) There appear to be two House seats that have switched from control of one party to the other: LD 17: Republican Lynda Wilson defeating incumbent Democratic State Rep. Monica Stonier by 51.48% - 48.52% LD 25: Republican Melanie Stambaugh defeating incumbent Democratic State Rep. Dawn Morrell by 54.75 - 45.25% There are also eight new House members who have replaced Representatives of the same party in this election: LD 4: Republican Bob McCaslin, who defeated fellow Republican Diana Wilhite by 57.69% - 42.31%, to replace appointed State Rep. Leonard Christian, who was defeated in the primary election. LD 13: Republican Tom Dent, who defeated fellow Republican Dani Bolyard by 63.24% - 36.76%, to replace Republican State Rep. Judy Warnick, who ran for the State Senate. LD 14: Republican Gina R. McCabe, who defeated Democrat Paul George by 68.68% - 31.32%, to replace retired State Rep. Charles Ross. LD 21: Democrat Strom Peterson, who defeated Republican Allen McPheeters by 60.31% - 39.69%, to replace retired Democratic State Rep. Mary Helen Roberts. LD 31: Republican Drew Stokesbary, who defeated Democrat Mike Sando by 60.97% - 39.03%, to replace State Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, who unsuccessfully ran for the State Senate. LD 42: Republican Luanne VanWerven, who defeated Democrat Satpal Sidhu by 55.7% - 44.3%, to replace retired Republican State Rep. Jason Overstreet. LD 44: Republican Mark Harmsworth leading Democrat Mike Wilson by 52.97% - 47.03% (768 votes) to replace resigned Republican State Rep Mike Hope LD 48: Democrat Joan McBride, who defeated Libertarian Tim Turner by 69.12% - 30.88% to replace State Rep. Cyrus Habib, who ran for the State Senate. One very special circumstance to note is in the 30th Legislative District: LD 30: Incumbent Democratic State Rep. Roger Freeman is defeating Republican Jack Dovey by 52.89% - 47.11%, though Rep. Freeman passed away just five days before the primary. As a result, the Pierce County Council and King County Council will need agree on a new Democratic Representative from a list of three candidates that will be submitted to them by the Precinct Committee Officers of the 30th Legislative District Democratic Party.
