Upon concluding his stint at a different junior high where Deanna was not present— a bitter, lonely span of his woeful existence marked by the most egregious desolation he had ever endured— Myles was forced to move on with his corporeal sentence on what was a wretchedly cruel earth. He had tried several times to get in touch with Deanna, only to be obstructed by the despicable officer Lancaster, who was always there to impede him and escort him back home, telling him “Best you leave that Chicana alone. I mean, I don’t mind a bit of Mexican food, but when it comes to mixing with them, you ought to keep your distance from those folks.” When Myles corrected Lancaster, pointing out the fact that Deanna was Salvadorian and not Mexican, Lancaster rollicked with laughter and chuckled, “As in El Salvador? That’s next to Cuba or something, right?”
