Upon hearing about the latest news of Robin Williams and that he had been diagnosed with Lewy Body, I thought of how the initial news of his passing had everyone talking about depression and mental illness. Having had a front row experience of my father being taken away from that disease, his paranoia and hallucinations, his not recognizing his own family, his nightmares and violent outbursts at not knowing where he was, how his body began to go painfully rigid, I can’t help but think of what Mr. Williams and his family were going through in his last days. He was not “depressed” nor did he suffer from “mental illness.” More and more is being discovered about this degenerative disease, yet those of us who have witnessed it first hand already know that it is horrific and awful. I urge everyone to look it up and change the narrative about Robin Williams.
