Thailand is not yet a signatory to the 1951 convention or the 1967 protocol and due to its immigration laws the vast majority of people seeking asylum and recognized refugees are likely to be illegal residents in the country and are regarded more or less as illegal migrants. It is also widely acknowledged that the numbers of persons seeking refuge in Thailand has significantly increased over the past 12 months due to an upsurge in the numbers of people fleeing the conflict in Syria and those escaping violence against religious minorities in Pakistan.
