Urban Shadow Walks, 2006 Taken from the Waste Land series (2005-2010) Digital video projection, dimensions variable (6’) Waste Land comprises eleven photographic and video installations derived from T. S Eliot’s 1922 poem. Serving as a meditation on the past and on the importance of place, each of the works are filmed either on the artist’s childhood home of the Isle of Wight, her current residence in London, or symbolic sites of her imagination. Urban Shadow Walks is a video projection consisting of four separate walks entitled ‘Station am’, ’City’, ’Station pm’ and ’Market’ laid out in a grid formation. Drawing upon Eliot’s poignant image of dispirited commuters walking over London Bridge, who are likened to the lost souls in Dante’s ‘Inferno’, Waterman focuses on her engagement within the London landscape and the routine journeys that she makes within it. Influenced by early avant-garde city films of the 1920’s and acting like a modernist flâneur figure, the fluctuating appearance of her shadow confirms her anonymity as she passes through the urban environment. The superimposition of two different takes of the same walk overlaid on top of each other reproduces the chaotic and fleeting sensations of city life, creating an abstracted cubist vision. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Classic Radio _______ FB: r-js/1vz7Pcz / TW: r-js/1kHd2Qt / Listen to LIPSapp Classic Radio r-js/1dOIQ18 #classicrock #rollingstones #ledzeppelin #santana #eagles #zztop #thewho #beatles #elvis #jimihendrix #dylan #acdc #michaeljackson #pinkfloyd #madonna #u2
