Urban Transformation in Jakarta The 486th anniversary of the foundation of Jakarta can be regarded as a reason to exercise significant programs to transform the city which entails not only city administration but also the inhabitants spending their lives in this ancient city. By this opportunity, the new governor and his team seem to have been arranging some activities under the sloganic expression of “Jakarta Baru”. I do not argue that this term is a contra phenomenon to the phenomenon of Kota Lama which refers to explicitly to the Dutch colonial era and mostly its merchandise activities. The latter is still a complete entity with its “depot”, administration hall, cannons so on as witnessed in the northern part of the city. Of course Jakarta is not restricted by the area of Kota Lama. For the last decades Jakarta has been the target of millions of migrants who have been looking for some aspirations particularly the economic one.
