Urgent Appeal from Displaced Basilan Villages IDPs as well as village officials in Lamitan of both displaced barangays as well as host barangays are urging immediate attention for the humanitarian needs of their constituencies. It is already the third day of displacement for the town of Lamitan and the second day for the towns of Tuburan, Tipo-Tipo, and Akbar. Please refer to our alert yesterday on the expansion of hostilities to the other towns. After going around, our volunteers have identified the following evac camps so far: 1) Lamitan Lamitan City Cultural Center of Lamitan City Barangay Hall of Colonia Residence of the Barangay Captain of Colonia Purok 2, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 13 sections of the National Highway (Home-based) 2) Tuburan Municipal Hall Lower Tablas (home based) 3) Tipo-Tipo Barangay Badja (home based) Lamitan as well as all other Basilan towns are heavily dependent on Zamboanga for their essential supplies. However, due to the disruption of commerce in Zamboanga also because of the ongoing crisis there, basic supplies in Lamitan have begun to go low even before fighting also broke out in that province. Our volunteers are still out in the field but perhaps the above info can already be used for further action leading towards the delivery of aid. Today would probably be a good day to get any humanitarian action going due to the tapering off of the level of violence since this morning. Be that as it may, a 20 vehicle long convoy of civilians could not pass through the national highway as they were attempting to make their way to the town center of Lamitan. Precaution is still advised. Also, there is still occasional sniping at Sitio Lagasan, Barangay Kulaybato, Lamitan City. For more updates, you may refer to our website for consolidated alerts or our running updates on my facebook account. For any clarification on this or future alerts/updates, you may write to Asmira whose email appears above. Thank you for all the attention and assistance you have extended to the affected communities. -- Atty. Zainudin S. Malang Executive Director Mindanao Human Rights Action Center, Inc.
