Useful tip to the Kenyans on the recent bomb and grenade blasts by terrorists. If you see a suspicious package, do not touch it, move away from it by the most direct route in a safe manner. Do not panic. Encourage others around you to move away also but do not cause panic. Report the incident to the police. The safe distance from a device varies depending on the type of device and the structure of your available cover. A safe bet is to move at least 200 metres from it and out of line of sight of it. If a grenade or device is thrown in your general direction dive in the opposite direction and hit the deck. Get as flat as possible. The average fuse on a grenade is between 5 and 7 seconds. By the time you see it flying through the air you can estimate that half of that time has already passed. You do not have time to do anything except hit the deck. The shrapnel from the blast will go outwards and upwards. If you are flat on the floor you stand less chance of being injured. Courtesy NIGEL BATCHELOR
