Using PVC glue this morning, and an overwhelming nostalgia came - TopicsExpress

Using PVC glue this morning, and an overwhelming nostalgia came over me although I could not figure out exactly why. Then it hit me, the adhesive smelled exactly like super-elastic bubble plastic! A toy from my youth in the mid 70s that I often found myself longing for at the local 5 and dime. It put a temporary smile on my face to be briefly transported to my adolescence through a sensory experience in the present day. I suppose it is similar to smelling fresh baked cookies or feeling a soft blanket. My joy soon soured, however when I thought back to said super-elastic toy. Why in the heck did it smell like PVC glue?? I fear I know the answer...as Im sure the FDA was not near as concerned with what kids got their hands on back in the day. I specifically recall chewing on the multicolored, balloon making material, providing the same sensation as smelling fresh copies from the school office! Perhaps this has a direct correlation with the fact that I can no longer help my 4th grader with his mathematics homework?! Or suppose it could be drinking from a stagnate water hose, playing in unknown watering holes, stabbing a stretch Armstrong (or stretch Monster) to play with the red goo that emerged. Im pretty sure some of my matchbox cars were made of lead, or at the very least painted with lead based paint. Its a minor miracle any of us Gen Xers made it at all. Although I really blame my inability to comprehend 4th grade math on the current methodologies taught today. What was wrong with chisenbop anyway?
