Usually, when couples celebrate anniversaries on Facebook, I see such sweet, romantic pronouncements of love and admiration - that it rivals some of the stuff Ive seen written on Hallmark cards. Today is my 12th anniversary, so I thought I would post something thats the exact opposite: Why Im surprised my wife continues to stick around. I just start with a quick recap of the proposal. We had just bought the engagement ring from Zales at the West Valley Fair Mall. As we were headed back to the car, Cara says to me, You know, just because youve bought the ring, doesnt mean youve asked me to marry you. And so, right there in the parking lot - not bending down on my knee over fear of blood and oil stains and crime scene tape - I asked her, in a tender way - Wanna get hitched? In my defense - she said Yes. But looking back, I think it had more to do with her fear of the gunshots echoing in the background - along with the cries for help or ambulances. We were married on August 3, 2012 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Had probably 80 to 100 people there in the former train depot. She in her wedding dress and me in my rented tux. Destined to spend the night in New York City. Two reasons why we got married on my birthday. It just worked out calendarwise, plus I thought I would never be able to forget my anniversary, because - well, its my birthday, too. Foolproof, right? Well, on August 3, 2013. One year later. I turned to my wife in all seriousness and asked, What did we do for my birthday last year? Ive never seen the color in someones face change so fast. Really! REALLY! We had a bunch of friends and family over? Everyone dressed real nice? The trip to New York?? None of this rings a bell??? Oops. Ever since, Ive been simply known to Caras friends and family as the man who forgot his first anniversary.
