Usufruct (“A Civil Law term referring to the right of one individual to use and enjoy the property of another, provided its substance is neither impaired nor altered”. Farlex, the free dictionary.) The use or mis-use of the word “usufruct” by Anthony Tiu in his Senate hearing testimony yesterday could unwittingly derail Vice President Binay’s presidential bid in 2016. Tiu was forced to admit that his company owned only the usufruct of the disputed 365-hectare property in Rosario, Batangas but not the property itself. The presumed owner is still Mr. Laureano to whom VP Binay allegedly sold the property to. However, if Mr. Laureano fails to show he had the capacity to purchase the property now worth about 2 billion, then there is the inescapable conclusion that the property must still be owned by the Vice President. It’s interesting that the anagram of “usufruct” is the ominous phrase: US-UR-FUCT. Oh, dear!
