Uygur Nationality There is a mountain named Tianshan covering with bright and shining snow in Xinjiang which is located in the northwest frontier of China. Just at the foot of this fabulous snow mountain, an ethnic group named Uyghur is really good at singing and dancing. Brief Introduction of Manchu Nationality Chinese Name: 维吾尔族wéi wú ěr zú, used to be called “回纥”、“回鹘”、“畏兀儿” English Name: Uyghur people, “Uyghur” means “unite” . Language: Uygur Language is a common language and only a small number of Uygur people can speak Mandarin. Based on Arabic alphabets, Uygur Language belongs to Turkic group in Altaic family. Population: totally 9.87million in 2009 in China Religion: Most Uyghurs are Muslim, and practice Sufism. Living area: Uyghurs live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China. An estimated 80% of Xinjiangs Uyghurs live in the southwestern part of the region, the Tarim Basin. More specific, most of Uyghurs gathers in the Kashgar, Hotan, Aksu, Korla Urumchi and Ili.Besides, Uyghurs also can be found in Taoyuan and Changde in Hunan province, Kaifeng and Zhengzhou in Henan Province. What for a living: The agriculture is the main economic way for Uyghur. They plant some crops like the cotton, wheat, corn and rice. In addition, they are also skilled in gardening. Eating habits of Uyghurs Uyghurs like eating cooked wheaten food, meat like beef,mutton, camel, chicken and goose, vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, onions, peppers, eggplants and celery, and fruits like Hami melon and grape without stone.Xinjiang abounds in sheep,therefore, Uyghurs like to eat lamb shashlik with strong flavor of cumin. Compare favourably with the former, Xinjiang rice also worth to try.There are several staple food, such as Naan(馕), rice with lamb羊肉抓饭,Samsa and noodles. Uyghurs like to treat guests with tea, naan and fruit before the main dishes are ready. Naan(馕náng), a kind of crusty pancake (staple food of the Uygur and Kazak nationalities). Lamb shashlik(羊肉串儿yáng ròu chuànr) Samsa( 烤包子),roast stuffed bun, are lamb pies baked using a special brick oven. Sangza(馓子 sǎn zi) is consisting of deep-fried noodles in a twisted pyramid shape. Uyghur pilaf (手抓饭) is a popular staple food in Xinjiang. Xurpa is lamb soup with Naan and soem vegetables.
