VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NEW YORK STATE OFFICE OF PARKS, RECREATION AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION THOUSAND ISLANDS STATE PARK REGION TITLE: Environmental Educator 2 SALARY GRADE/HIRING RATE: SG-18 / $51,268 - $65,190 NEGOTIATING UNIT: NU-05 - PEF JURISDICTIONAL CLASS: Competitive TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Provisional WORK LOCATION: Wellesley Island Park Complex Minna Anthony Common Nature Center Fineview, NY 13640 WORK SCHEDULE: Must be able to work a flexible work schedule including nights, weekends and, when necessary, holidays. OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Park Manager 3, the Environmental Educator 2 at this facility will be responsible for: • Delivering quality environmental programs to park visitors and patrons; evaluating existing programs and working with staff to develop and implement updated or new programs periodically. Coordinate with local school or recreation groups to deliver programming either on site or at off-site locations. • Promoting programs/functions occurring at the Nature Center to Park patrons and local communities. • Working closely with park management to integrate Nature Center activities with Park functions/activities. • Closely monitoring the extensive trail network at the Nature Center and coordinating needed maintenance with Park staff or volunteer groups. • Maintaining the exhibits located in the Nature Center and work with staff to update exhibits periodically. • Effectively supervising both permanent and seasonal staff including proper delegation of duties, interview and hire seasonal staff, motivate staff to function as a team and provide coaching. • Working closely with the Friends of the Minna Anthony Common Nature Center on programming and facility improvements and assist in coordinating Friends sponsored functions held at the Nature Center. • Coordinating with other Nature Centers/Recreation groups in the Region and assist with developing programs in those facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional/technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education*; OR 2. Two years of the experience described above AND 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 24 college semester credit hours in agronomy, biology (but not the study of humans or domesticated or farm animals) earth science, ecology, environmental education, environmental science, field natural history, forestry, geology, marine science, natural resources interpretation, or soil science. OR 3. A bachelor’s degree in the biological science, environmental education, environmental science, forestry, or natural resources interpretation. You must also have two years of additional experience in environmental education*. “Environmental Education” is defined as teaching about or interpreting the natural world, the principles of ecology, natural resources management, and environmental quality management. It deals with the interrelationships of plants, animals and the non-living environment and emphasizes human interactions with these components. NOTE: Individuals appointed provisionally must take and pass a Civil Service examination for this position and be reachable; i.e. be one of the top three (3) candidates on the resulting eligible list willing to accept the position.
