VALENTINE’S APPEAL In memory of Blake - a boxer who was loved THIS IS BLAKE’S STORY: A few months ago, BDRNE were asked to rehome a white, deaf boxer boy aged two and a half. The owner had two boxers - brothers from the same litter. Blake, who was white and deaf, had been ‘given’ to her as a special offer ‘buy one get one free’ from the breeder! We were told that if we were unable to help him Blake was due to be put to sleep. The problem, they said, was that he barked all the time. The owners had put an ‘Electric Shock Collar’ on Blake to try to stop him barking - he had been wearing this collar for nearly a year, round the clock! The scene that met us when went to collect him was one never forgotten, he was locked in a very small crate in a dingy, cluttered dark room. He was sitting in his own excrement. After further questioning, it was revealed that Blake had never been walked and was only let out of the cage to do his business. Blake’s injuries due to wearing the electric collar were horrific. He was placed in foster care but it became clear very quickly that he hated being in a crate - it had previously been his prison and he did not know how to live in a family environment. He was subsequently moved to small, privately-run kennels where he could be given extra attention and specialist advice was taken and implemented. Everyone who came into contact with Blake loved him and he loved back in return. Every hour of every day was a new adventure for him, he never looked back and with the help of one very special committee member who spent countless hours with him he was able to move on and learn. She taught him sign language and she gave him love, they walked together and communicated. His future was secured. During this time the wounds on Blake’s neck started to heal but he was left with a large amount of scar tissue which might have to be removed in due course. We knew Blake was a special dog, he had been through so much in his short life, but day by day he was moving on. He had forgiven the human race for his torture. Then the perfect match came along - a couple who were able to offer Blake everything he needed and off he went to live in his forever home, where he experienced everything that he should have had in his horrific past. He was so loved. There is no doubt that his time in his forever home was the happiest time of his life. On Christmas day 2013 whilst playing ball in the garden Blake collapsed, his family immediately started to resuscitate him, but sadly Blake died. Blake lived and loved life to the full in the two short months after he was rescued; he experienced so many of the things he had previously never known during his short life. He received endless love and he went to The Bridge knowing he was loved. He touched so many people and his memory will live on... RIP Blake April 2011 – 25th December 2013 Without available funds BDRNE could not have helped Blake, supporters who donate on a regular monthly basis are vital so that BDRNE have ready access to funds in the case of an emergency. We are appealing for new supporters who can donate a regular sum (of your choosing) each month by standing order. If you can help, please follow the link to download the form and hand to your bank. boxerdogrescue.co.uk/Forms/standing%20order%20template.doc
