VERY IMPORTANT: FILM WRITERS ASSOCIATION ELECTIONS Dear screenwriters! This post concerns the future of Indian screenwriting. And, by implication, yours too. Things have improved for Indian screenwriters over the last couple of years. Many more opportunities, better payments, more prominent credit, many craft workshops, seminars and conferences, a sense of community. And, most important, the copyright act was amended in favour of writers. However, we are not entirely out of the woods yet. The amendments to the Copyright Act have been challenged in court by producers and broadcasters. FWA, lead by the Progressive Writers Group, has intervened to defend the amendments. Moreover, the Standard Contract for film & TV writers is currently being negotiated with producers and broadcasters (includes i. Minimum fees for budget-wise slabs, ii. Credit guarantee, iii. No arbitrary termination, iv. Royalty payment via Copyright Society) The Copyright Society has been initiated and has to function smoothly to ensure collection and distribution of royalties for screenwriters work, here and abroad. (Bilateral arrangements with societies in other countries is already underway.) A National Solidarity Front for Screenwriters was formed a few months ago. It has to be strengthened and made operational and more effective. All these and more initiatives have been taken by the Progressive Writers Group in the last six years since they took charge of FWA. You NEED a strong FWA. For that, we NEED you to come and vote. FWA Elections on August 17, at Celebration Club, Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West. (Voting from 1-6 PM). ALTERNATIVELY, IF YOU IGNORE THIS AND DONT COME TO VOTE, AND SOME OTHER GROUP GETS INTO THE EC AND DERAILS THESE OBJECTIVES, THE RESPONSIBILITY WILL ALSO BE YOURS! Sorry to sound like this, but it is a time to choose! Surely you can come for half an hour, once in two years, to secure the future of your union. (We have Electronic Voting Machines this time!
