VESSEL WITH IMMIGRANTS. Monday morning found Coast Guard vessels from Zakynthos and Kefalonia heading towards a call for assistance in the sea area between the two islands, plus a passing cargo ship [ flying a Turkish flag] to tow if needed. A wooden boat, 12-metres long, with approximately 65 passengers - 8 women and 9 children amongst them - called for assistance to a mechanical problem, also stating they were without a captain. Due to the fact that the vessel was 16 nautical miles from Argostoli and 40 nautical miles from Zakynthos harbour, but in International waters, it couldnt be boarded as there were no signs of illegal entry into Greek waters. Apparently, the boat had set-off from Konstantinopoli [ Istanbul ] heading for Italy. From 10.00 to 21.00 negotiations took place trying to persuade the immigrants to have their vessel towed to Agia Pelagia at Svoronata, or board the Coast Guard vessel. But they insisted only on aid to fix the mechanical problem. The Greek authorities had to suffice with providing food and water. Early Tuesday morning found the vessel once again on course for their destination. The mechanical problem was fixed with fuel. Sources: ermisnews.gr and imerazante.gr.
