VIA BAUCHI STATE GOVERNMENT 21ST AUGUST 2014... Bauchi govt spends N950m on IDPs Bauchi state Government has expended the sum of N950,000,000 on resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who migrated to the state from some neighboring states. The Permanent Secretary of the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Mahmud A. Garba, disclosed this while speaking to news men in his office yesterday in Bauchi Mahmud Garba said Bauchi state is hosting displaced persons from Borno, Yobe, Taraba, Plateau and Kaduna states who are currently settled in Bauchi, Dass, Tafawa Balewa, Bogoro, Toro, Gamawa, Giade, Darazo and Misau local government areas. The Permanent Secretary said his agency had succeeded in positively touching the lives of displaced families residing at different camps in the state with the support of the state government. He cited example of one of the camps in Mararrabar Liman Katagum in Bauchi Local Government area, where over Three Hundred families were supported with food items, building materials and clothing. Garba said other areas included Wuro Magaji, Wuro Jauro and Liman Katagum in Bauchi Local Government, Kuletu in Dass as well as Zabir camp in Tafawa Balewa Local Government area. Stressing that the Governor was always ready to approve any request presented to him for onward distribution to victims of disasters in the state. Speaking on the support the agency gets from government and non-governmental organisations within and outside the country, the SEMA Permanent Secretary disclosed that a Portuguese humanitarian organisation was recently in Bauchi to discuss modalities for supporting the IDP’s who are currently residing in the state. He further said that Bauchi SEMA is also supported by USAID, UNICEF and other international organisations. The Permanent Secretary commended Governor Yuguda for approving money to purchase food items, blankets and other necessities in case of any disaster in the state. Alhaji Mahmud Garba said in view of the performance of the agency, he was awarded the best disaster manager of the year by an international organisation, saying the honor has encouraged him to perform better.
