VICTIMS OF PORTUGUESE SLAVE HUNTERS: This version of the illustration published in Heroes of the Dark Continent by J.W. Buel in 1890. The illustration was taken from Mission dexploration du Haut-Niger: Voyage au Soudan Francais by Joseph Simon Gallieni (published Paris, 1885). Although Buels caption reads Victims of Portuguese Slave Hunters, the slave traders shown are not Portuguese but Mande-speaking Africans. The location depicted is approximately in the area of present-day Mali.
