VICTOR OR VICTIM? “But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1Corinthians 15:57 There are those that want me to believe, that because of my God given, beautiful brown exterior, that I am a helpless VICTIM. They try very hard to convince me I’m unable to succeed or make progress in my life because I’m being victimized in some shape, form or fashion. When I choose to be a VICTOR and an OVERCOMER, these people get angry with me to the point of character assassination, name calling, and of course, revocation of my racial membership. Some of these people are family, good friends, and most of them are believers in Christ. I have to tell them,” I’m sorry, you’re way too late to convince me of that. I serve a Mighty God!” I thank God and the Lord Jesus Christ for His Victorious and Triumphant Power in my life. His Word is full of promises to me and not one of them is based on my skin color. And there are not enough devils in hell or anywhere else to convince me otherwise. They want me to deny that God has done exceedingly abundantly above all that I could ask or think. They want me to lie on the Lord and say I haven’t been blessed beyond measure by living in the United States of America, because of God’s hand on this country. They want me to murmur and complain, instead of praise and worship God for all of His goodness toward me. They would have me telling everyone I’m blessed and highly favored spiritually, but have me out protesting the fact that I’m not politically. All I have to say to them is, If God be for me, who can be against me? Finally, as a “Black Man” people of a certain philosophical/political worldview want me to be focused on the past, constantly looking backwards on all that went wrong. While ignoring all of the good and the things that went right. They want me to be angry, bitter, discouraged, and hopeless. They want me to justify hatred and resentment when I am commanded to Love and Forgive. Again, I say to them you’re too late. I refuse to look back and get stuck in the past. I serve a God of Love, Healing, and Reconciliation. My God is constantly moving forward and never dwelling in the past. Jesus warns me against looking back and getting stuck in the past saying, “Remember Lot’s wife” and again “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back [to the things behind] is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62 In short, I’m a VICTOR, not a VICTIM. I am BLESSED and HIGHLY FAVORED. I’m looking FORWARD and REFUSE to get STUCK in the past. If this makes me less of a “Black Man” in the eyes of some, so be it. I’m still a child of God, and I’m going to heaven and that’s all that counts.
