VIGIL/PROTEST: STOP RUSSIA’S ETHNIC CLEANSING OF CRIMEA Friday March 21 @ Noon Euromaidan Ottawa will be holding a dramatized vigil to draw attention to the plight of Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians, Jews, and others, who are facing increasing degrees of harassment, violence and threats – intended to induce them to leave Crimea. What: Vigil/Protest against Russia’s Ethnic Cleansing of Crimea. Attendees will be encouraged to wear black, and will have their hands bound in the tricolour of the Russian Federation flag When: Friday, March 21st, 2014 from 12:00PM – 12:30PM (ET) Where: Canadian Human Rights Monument, Elgin Street at Lisgar, Ottawa Why: Since the Russian military occupation of Crimea, non-Russian groups have been targeted by violence and intimidation on a peninsula where multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious harmony had heretofore been the norm – in fact, a centuries-old tradition. Specifically, Tatars have been beaten, some have had “X”s painted or carved on their doors, Jews have seen an upsurge in violently anti-Semitic graffiti, ethnic Ukrainians have been abducted and deported, and Catholic clergy have faced intimidation and beatings.
