VISE SQUAD TUESDAY 5/27 6pm at Big Beaver Brewery Runoff is here, which is our cue to adjust our attention to the many great stillwaters in the area, where chironomids and damsels are the ticket when the water warms a bit after ice-off. This Tuesday at Vise Squad I plan on adapting some of our best chironomid patterns into dry/emerger flies, Klinkhammer style. A Klinkhammer is a dry tied on a droopy hook (Daiichi 1160 or 1167) so the body dangles below the surface film, and is often used as a general imitation of emerging caddis or mayflies. I found this image of a lake chironomid midge suspended at the surface, and is sure looks to me like the klinkhammer style hook is a perfect chassis on which to imitate this vulnerable stage right before emergence. If you want to give it a try, bring things like Hook: Daiichi 1160 , Tiemco 2488, Dai Riki 135l#12, #14 or so Thread: Red, Black, or your favorite chironomid color, UTC 70 Body: Tying thread, midge tubing, pheasant tail, or holo tinsel Rib: Krystal Flash, or fine wire Post: Mcflylon, MFC Widows Web, Wapsi polypropylene yarn Hackle: Saddle hackle, grizzly, or any color Bring a thirst, bring a friend, bring a question, bring an attitude, or leave everything at home and just show up to visit! See you there! M
