VO China-Asean Expo trade growth expands cooperation INTRO: The 11th China-Asean Expo has seen a large number of booths displaying foreign goods, with 42 percent of stalls being accounted for. Countries requesting to display their products have also increased as 6,009 booths applied for a spot this year. STORY: Around 4,600 booths from 2,330 enterprises are representing several Asean member states at the exhibition, while 1,259 stalls are displaying goods from businesses from countries outside the China-Asean region. The 11th China-Asean Expo is running from September 16-19 in Nanning, Guangxi province of China. The Vice Premier of China Zhang Gaoli and 10 Asean leaders attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition on Tuesday. The expo is undertaking the theme ‘Jointly Building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR), which aims to promote joint negotiation and construction of a ‘win-win cooperation, while further contributing to a new China-Asean partnership. The number of consumer and investor groups in the China-Asean region was increasing at a rate of more than 80 percent, while consumer and investor groups in other countries outside of this region had increased by 14 percent. More consumers were evident, with countries such as Australia, India, South Korea, Hungary, Germany, France, United States and Canada also attending. People from countries in the Middle East and South America were also visiting the expo. At this years expo, large-scale sourcing programmes for construction materials, consumable goods packaging, electricity, rubber, rice and palm oil were available. This provided new opportunities for small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the China-Asean region to take part in marketing, trading and other economic activities with countries such as Australia and the Republic of Korea. As well as the exhibition itself, 13 high-end forums and conferences would be held during the expo. These include forums such as: the China-Asean Cyber Space Forum, which aims to exchange and cooperate on establishing a new gateway and hub for the construction of the MSR; and the China-Asean Chief Justices Forum, which will further strengthen cooperation between China and the Asean region in providing legal protection for investment and trade. A series of investment promotion activities will also take place on key areas of the construction of MSR such as interconnectivity, industrial cooperation, marine cooperation and financial cooperation. These activities will be held at the Asean Industrial Parks conference, a roundtable meeting on investment cooperation and a conference on financial support of Chinese businesses investing in the Asean region. The meetings hope to provide invaluable information and business opportunities to promote investment cooperation between China and Asean. According to the China-Asean bilateral trade statistics, the trade volume between China and Asean reached a total of US$4,436 billion, which is an increase of 10.9 percent in comparison with 10.3 percent recorded in 2012.
