VO Two Lao students depart for UK after receiving the prestigious Chevening scholarships INTRO: Two Lao students have been given the opportunity to undertake their master’s degree studies in the United Kingdom after receiving the prestigious Chevening scholarships, British Ambassador to Laos, Philip Malone also announced an increase in the number of scholarships available to candidates from Laos, With nine scholarships now on offer STORY: The announcement was made in Vientiane recently during a farewell reception for the 2014 Chevening scholarship recipients, Khachonesack Douangphoutha and Phetmany Xaychaleune, before they travel to the UK. The reception was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Madame Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun and other officials. British Ambassador to Laos, Philip Malone also announced a big increase in UK funded scholarships, with nine Chevening scholarships to available to students in Laos from next year onwards. The Chevening Scholarship programme is funded by the British Foreign Commonwealth Office and partner organisations, with operations in 144 countries and territories worldwide awarding scholarships to exceptional individuals with leadership potential. The programme offers a unique opportunity for recipients to build a global network of continuing professional significance, as well as enabling talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK. The Chevening programme has operated in Laos for nearly 20 years and there are currently around 20 Lao Chevening alumni working in a range of leadership positions in their chosen field. English… Whilst presenting the recipients with their scholarship certificates, Ambassador Philip Malone said, “He is delighted to be presenting these awards to our two Chevening scholars here. It is a great achievement to have been selected for these awards.” According to the ambassador, the UK is a world leader in education and we hope you use this opportunity to bring back new skills and perspectives for the future benefit of Laos. Education is the foundation to the development of any country and I encourage all interested people to follow in the footsteps of our two young scholars and our Chevening alumni in attendance, by applying for the current call for Chevening applications.” Departing for the UK later this month, Khachonesack will study for an MSc in Information Systems and Business Analysis at Aston University, while Phetmany will attend the University of Warwick to study for an MSc in Intercultural Communication for Business and the Professions. This year the UK government has announced an increase in the number of scholarships available to candidates from Laos, including new partnerships with Warwick University and the Prudence Foundation. With nine scholarships now on offer, applications for the Chevening Scholarships 2015-16 are currently open until November 15.
