VOICES AGAINST VIOLENCE: GROUPS DEMAND LAW PROTECTING WOMEN A number of human rights organizations have voiced the issue of domestic violence in Armenia, on Tuesday (01 October, 2013) in front of the government building, urging the authorities to keep the promise of passing a law on preventing it. Holding posters with calls, such as “Our mothers and the entire society suffer from domestic violence,” “Gender dogma leads to domestic violence”, “Violence ruins Armenian families” and alike, members of the No to Violence Against Women coalition went on a 12-hour peaceful protest on October 1, in remembrance of the same day in 2010 when 20-year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan died as a result of physical abuse her husband and mother-in-law had committed against her. The coalition was created after that tragic incident, and for two years has been holding similar public events. Society Without Violence NGO project manager Anna Nikoghosyan says in their letter to be passed over to the prime minister they demand from the government to live up to its commitment and assist in officially marking October 1 as Against Domestic Violence day nationwide & to adopt the bill on domestic violence, which has been developed and worked on for many years. Between 2011-2013 a number of women’s rights organizations have received 8,012 calls on hotline numbers, reporting domestic violence. - J.B For more such stories and updates, please like facebook/cmrbetiyaan
