VP BELLS TO REPRESENT PALAU IN 20TH MCES Tia Belau. June 2nd, 2014. The President of Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Governors of the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands, the Territory of Guam, and the FSM States of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, will meet in Yap for their Twentieth Summit on June 5-6. However, Palau will be represented in the Micronesian Chief Executives’ Summit (MCES) by Vice President Antonio Bells in place of President Remengesau who will remain on island for other pressing commitments, including Pacific Island Forum planning, the request of state governments to meet with him, and other government matters requiring his attention, disclosed an official from the President’s office. The summit is an annual gathering for the six Governors and the three Presidents to examine issues of common concern, agree on ways to collectively address shared challenges, and collaborate on strengthening opportunities in ways that benefit Micronesian region. Other than Vice President Bells, other chief executives attending the 20th MCES include Emanuel Mori, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, representing their respective chief executives are David Kabua, Minister of International Affairs of the Republic of the Marshall Islands; Telo T. Taitague, special assistant, external affairs advisor to the Governor of Guam; and Esther Fleming, special assistant for administration to the Governor, Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands. The governors of the Micronesian federation will also attend; Lyndon Jackson of Kosrae; John Ehsa of Pohnpei; Johnson Elimo of Chuuk; and Sebastian Anefal of Yap. The Summit will also involve top officials from the participating governments who will be assisting the chief executives during the course of the discussions. During the three days of the summit, leaders, along with their delegations, will focus their discussions on a wide range of issues ranging from environment to health, tourism, and transportation. At the end the executives will endorse agreements on coordination and implementation of regional strategies, all for the betterment and welfare of the the people of the Micronesian region. As part of the effort to make the 20th MCES a success, the organizing committee has arranged events and activities for the visiting delegations, so they enjoy their time while in Yap. Since the 1st Summit was hosted in Palau in March 2003, the MCES has met bi-annually and has issued a series of joint communiqués and related resolutions, letters and associated actions and arrangements. These cooperative arrangements form an emerging foundation of regional cooperation and governance. In December 2012, in the RMI, the Chief Executives voted to meet annually beginning in 2013. The primary purpose of the MCES is to coordinate and implement regional strategies to assist its member jurisdictions. Among those initiatives are the following: • The Micronesian Challenge • The Pacific Islands Regional Recycling Initiative Council (PIRRIC) • The Regional Invasive Species Council (RISC) • The Regional Energy Committee; Green Energy Micronesia • The Regional Telecommunications Committee • The Regional Tourism Committee • The Regional Transportation Committee • The Regional Workforce Development Council • The Regional Health Committee • The Micronesian Center for a Sustainable Future (serving as Secretariat to the MCES).
