And from that time farm workers often endured terrible living and working conditions. The organized defeat of the Bracero Program in 1964 opened the opportunity for a new effort to organize farm workers. The Great Delano Grape Strike, La Peregrinacion (The Pilgrimage) of 1966, signaled the emergence of a new social phenomenon, a new consciousness, a new identity politics and a new organizing impetus. Leaders like Ceasar Chavez and Delores Huerta drew from the cultural roots of the predominant Mexican farm workers and training their own with the Community Service Organization to help establish the United Farm Workers as a political tour de force. El pueblo unido jama sera vincedo. Si se puede! Claro que se puede! (The people united will be defeated. Yes we can. Its clear we can). No nos moveran. No pasaran, el picket sign.
