Vacations seem to make more work than they avoid. Don’t get me - TopicsExpress

Vacations seem to make more work than they avoid. Don’t get me wrong – it’s great to get away – and you should do it whenever you can. What I find is that the work you do to get ahead before vacation and the work you do when you are back from vacation seem more than the work you would have done if you had just stayed home. The moral of the story, to me, is that we all need a break but it comes at a cost. Life marches on and time passes too fast. It seems like yesterday when Autumn moved to Norton and we started this little clinic. It was three years ago and a real lifetime ago for me. We get caught up in the today and the things we need to do today. We stop looking at the forrest and just see the trees in our way. God has given me a few real vacations in life. In 2005 I moved back to SW VA to be a physician. I planted my feet firmly in Medicine and began what I thought would be a hard working but rewarded job and life. Three years into my career I was sidelined by cancer. The treatment alone took almost two years from both of our lives. It was a time to reflect and to see who I was. Some things I liked, others not so much. Then I was better and a survivor. I started to see the trees again not looking at the overall. God refocused me. I became ill again in 2013 and in the fight for life gave up my feet. Today I think I see the forest but sometimes I still lose focus. I challenge you to take a break – if not for a week of vacation – then just for an hour. Back away from the things that have to be done. Reflect on where you are and where you are going. Yesterday Google celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary if its initial sale of stock. The document they wrote to sell their stock had benefits such a spell check. They had a vision for where they would go and what their plans were. They made it, they started with a goal and a direction. Their stock sells today for over 1000% more than the initial day. We should all do the same thing. Write down where you want to be in ten years – its’ not easy but it’s looking at the big picture. Then, work to make it happen. Every day think of where you want to be. It will help you stop focusing on the little things and make your life what you want it to be.
