Vahiguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vahiguru Ji Ki Fateh Darbar Sahib Hukamnama on 09 Oct 2014 from SGGS p 419 is presented with an interpretation. Āsā mėhlā 1. Mansā manėh samāSmall white squareile bẖaSmall white squareojal sacẖ ṯarṇā. Āḏ jugāḏ ḏaSmall white squareiSmall white squareāl ṯū ṯẖākur ṯerī sarṇā. ||1|| Baani of the first Guru in Raag Aasa. We should (Samaa-el-e = absorb) dissolve our (mansa) desires (manah-i) within the mind – and focus on the Almighty - if we wish to (tarna = swim) get across (bhaujal-u) the world-ocean – overcome vices in the world-play - and get to (sach-i) to the Eternal. I cannot do it on my own and hence seek (t-eri) Your (sarna) sanctuary – place myself in Your care/obedience, o (daiaal-u = compassionate) kind (tthaakur) Master; (too) You have been there (aad-i) from before the beginning of time and (jugaad-i) through the ages, and are helpful to the seekers. 1. Ŧū ḏāṯou ham jācẖikā har ḏarsan ḏījai. Gurmukẖ nām ḏẖiSmall white squareāSmall white squareīSmall white squareai man manḏar bẖījai. ||1|| rahāSmall white squareo. (Too) You are (daatou = giver) the beneficent Master and (ham) I (jaachika) a beggar – seeking You; please (deejai = give) grant me (darsan-u) vision of You within my mind. For this, please enable me to find the guru; it is (dhiaaiai) by focusing attention on (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands (gurmukh-i) as taught by the guru that (man mandar-u) the mind-temple (bheejai = drenched) experiences the Divine within. 1. (Rahaau) dwell and reflect on this. Kūṛā lālacẖ cẖẖodīSmall white squareai ṯaSmall white squareo sācẖ pacẖẖāṇai. Gur kai sabaḏ samāSmall white squareīSmall white squareai parmārath jāṇai. ||2|| When (laalach-u = greed) craving for (koorra = false) transitory pleasures of vices (chhodiai = left) is given up, i.e. vices are removed from the mind, (tau) then the mind (pachhaanai) recognizes (saach-u) the Eternal within. (Samaaiai) one is absorbed in the Master (Sabad-i = by the word) by following the teachings of the guru, and (parmaarath) the highest understanding – awareness of the need for emulation of Divine virtues and obedience of Divine commands is - (jaanai) realized. 2. Ih man rājā lobẖīSmall white squareā lubẖSmall white squareṯaSmall white squareo lobẖāSmall white squareī. Gurmukẖ lobẖ nivārīSmall white squareai har siSmall white squareo baṇ āSmall white squareī. ||3|| (Ihu) this mind is (raaja = king) highly (lobhia) greedy and (lubhtau lobhaai) gets easily tempted. (Lobh-u) greed – of transitory things - is (nivaarai) banished (gurmukh-i) by the guru’s teachings and one (ban-i aai) gets along (sio) with (har-i) the Almighty within, i.e. ever lives by Divine virtues and commands. 3. Kalar kẖeṯī bījīSmall white squareai kiSmall white squareo lāhā pāvai. Manmukẖ sacẖ na bẖījSmall white squareī kūṛ kūṛ gadāvai. ||4|| (Kio) how can one, i.e. one cannot, (laaha pavai = earn profit) get a good output by (beejiai) sowing (kh-eti) in soil (kalar-i) with potassium nitrate in it, i.e. a mind having evil within cannot hope to find the Almighty there. Similarly (manmukkh-u) a self-willed person cannot (bheeja-ee = drenched) be absorbed/experience (sach-i) the Eternal; (koorr-u) falsehood can (gadaavai) merge only (koorr-i) with falsehood – not the Eternal Truth. 4. Lālacẖ cẖẖodahu anḏẖiho lālacẖ ḏukẖ bẖārī. Sācẖou sāhib man vasai haSmall white squareumai bikẖ mārī. ||5|| (Chhoddahu) give up (laalach-u) greed, o (andhio = blind people) you mortals blinded by attachment to material things; (laalach-i) being caught in greed off transitory gains/pleasures causes (bhaari) great (dukh-u) suffering. But there is a solution; when (saachou) the Eternal (sahib-u) Master (vasai = abides) is remembered (man-i) in the mind, (bikh-u) the affliction of (haumai) ego - which causes attachment to the world-play - is (maari) killed. 5. Ḏubiḏẖā cẖẖod kuvātaṛī mūshuge bẖāSmall white squareī. Ahinis nām salāhīSmall white squareai saṯgur sarṇāSmall white squareī. ||6|| (Chhodd-i) give up (kuvaattri) the evil path of (dubidha) duality – thinking of others than the Creator - otherwise (moosahug-e) you will be robbed – of goodness, (bhaai) o brethren. To remain on the path of goodness, we should (slaahiai) praise – and practice, (naam-u) Divine virtues and commands, by placing ourselves (sarnai = in sanctuary) in care/obedience of (satigur) the true guru. 6. Manmukẖ pathar sail hai ḏẖarig jīvaṇ fīkā. Jal mėh keṯā rākẖīSmall white squareai abẖ anṯar sūkā. ||7|| (Manmukh) a self-willed person is like a (sail-u) rock (pathar-u) stone; his/her (jeevan-u) life is (dhrig-u) disgraceful and (pheeka) insipid – virtue-less. Just like the stone (raakhiai) kept (mah-i) in (jal) water (k-eta = whatever) for any length of time remains (sooka) dry, a self-willed person is not receptive to guidance (antar-i) in his/her (abh) mind. 7. Har kā nām niḏẖān hai pūrai gur ḏīSmall white squareā. Nānak nām na vīsrai math amriṯ pīSmall white squareā. ||8||15|| (Naam-u) virtues and commands of (har-i) the Almighty are (nidhaan-u) a treasure (deeaa) given by (poorai) by the perfect (gur-i) guru. One by whom Naam is never (veesrai) forgotten, that person (math-i) churns the mind with it – reflects on Divine virtues and commands – and (peeaa) drinks (amrit-u) the life-giving elixir i.e. is guided by Naam or virtues and commands of the Almighty. 8. 15.
